Art and music go hand in hand as East Tennessee artist, Deborah Cain, very often combines the two careers. She has been a musician most of her life, and now as she scales down a hectic life of teaching, rehearsals and concerts - more time is being carved out to produce her art.

The artist works on site at her cozy little white gallery on the corner of Parkway and Dolly Parton Parkway, in Sevierville, Tennessee. Here, she does custom framing, paints and produces Giclees, note cards and book marks of her work. Giclees are printed on watercolor canvas, then sprayed with a UV protectant. She uses a variety of paints and techniques including oil, rice paper, acrylic, watercolor, casien, mixed media and collage.

Many pieces in the gallery are rice papers, a very thin sheet of Japanese Masa Paper. The artist wrinkles the rice paper. The paper is then glued to the watercolor paper. She looks at the wrinkles, then decides what to paint; Watercolor, gouche, acrylic or casein paint. The finished art has aged texture, or a three-dimensional feeling to it. No two of these are ever alike.

Deborah is a member of the Tennessee Artists Association. Her art education has been private study, in addition to workshops, which include Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, TN. Deborah states: "I am passionate about music themed collages. I like to take old music and make a collage, gluing the music down, painting figures; A piano, violin, etc. It gives me great pleasure to work with photographs brought in by a client. I love bringing to life a painting of their homeplace or something from their past - to make their ideas and memories a physical presence."

I am frequently asked to name my favorite medium. I always say that I love them all. They each have their pros and cons.
